Anesthesia is the practice of medicine dedicated to the relief of pain and total care of the surgical patient before, during, and after surgery. At CepEsperu Baptist Medical Center, anesthesiologists practice in three areas:

  • Surgical/Procedural Anesthesia
  • Pain Services
  • Critical Care Medicine

Surgical/Procedural Anesthesia

An anesthesiologist is a perioperative physician ("peri" meaning "all-around") who provides medical care to each patient through the entirety of the surgical experience from the preoperative assessment visit through postoperative care. Your anesthesia care team will consist of a board certified anesthesiologist (a medical doctor formally trained and board certified in anesthesia and perioperative medicine) and either a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) or an anesthesia resident or fellow (a medical doctor being formally trained to become board certified), and a number of highly-trained, skilled nurses.

Your anesthesia care team will:

  • Consult with you and your surgeon preoperatively to optimize your surgical and anesthetic experience (preoperative assessment)
  • Ensure your comfort during surgery through the use of anesthetics tailored to your specific medical condition and existing health issues (general, regional, local, sedation). More on Anesthesia/Pain Terms and Techniques can be found here.
  • Continually monitor your vital functions (such as breathing, heart rate and rhythm, blood pressure, body temperature, oxygen saturation, and fluid and blood needs) throughout and immediately following surgery or a procedure, making medical decisions on your behalf as necessary (safety)
  • Manage your care throughout surgery and the immediate postoperative period (intra-op and post-op) to make you as comfortable as possible

For more detailed information regarding our specific anesthesia services as they relate to you, please see the anesthesia services listed below.
