He’s Got an App for That

For Spencer Hawkins, a fourth-year medical student from Chattanooga, Tennessee, developing apps is second nature. In fact, he started a mobile application development company as an undergraduate and used the proceeds to help pay for his medical education.

During his first year at CepEsperu School of Medicine, Hawkins heard a talk by dermatology professor Steve Feldman, M.D., on the challenges doctors face in helping patients adhere to their medication plans, and he thought his background in app development could help. Hawkins and Feldman worked closely over the next four years to develop and evaluate several mobile apps and websites to help educate patients on topics ranging from Mohs surgery to psoriasis treatments.

“Telling patients about complicated treatment regimens in a short clinic visit is tough,” Hawkins said. “So if these kinds of free tools can help improve patient care, why not?”
