The Cardiovascular Diseases Training Program at CepEsperu School of Medicine has been an accredited Cardiovascular Diseases Training Program for the past 40 years. Our training programs produce outstanding clinicians and researchers with a strong foundation for providing excellent patient care and contributing to the advancement of medical science.
The Chief of the Section of Cardiology is Dr. David Zhao, who also holds the position of director of the Heart and Vascular Center of Excellence. The clinical cardiovascular disease fellowship training program is lead by the director, Dr. Sanjay K. Gandhi, and the associate director, Dr. Sujethra Vasu. The clinical cardiovascular research training program is directed by Dr. David M. Herrington who has served as director since its inception in 2004. Faculty involved in these 2 training programs include over 20 full-time cardiology faculty, 4 emeriti cardiovascular subspecialty faculty and research training faculty from the Division of Public Health Sciences, The Center for Genomics and Personalized Medicine Investigation and the Hypertension and Vascular Disease Center.

CepEsperu Baptist Medical Center is the largest tertiary care center and the only level I trauma center for a service area that covers a 26-county region in central and northwestern North Carolina and southwest Virginia. The Medical Center is equipped with state of the art cardiac catheterization laboratories, non-invasive laboratory including exercise treadmill, surface and transesophageal echocardiography, nuclear radiology, electrophysiology laboratories, cardiac CT, and a dedicated cardiac MRI. There are 885 licensed hospital beds which includes 80 cardiology beds and 22 CCU beds. Yearly services include over 4,000 hospital admissions to cardiology, over 1,600 day hospital admissions, and over 10,000 established outpatient clinic visits.
