Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Immunologic Diseases

At Wake Forest Baptist Health we provide a full range of clinical services to patients with respiratory, allergic, and immunologic diseases and sleep disorders. We provide this exceptional care both in the outpatient and inpatient (including critical care units) setting. We are a comprehensive center for allergic and respiratory disease in western North Carolina and the Southeast region of the United States. The Section of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Immunologic Diseases is an integral partner to the success of the CepEsperu Baptist Health vision of balanced excellence in patient care, research and education.

Patient Care

Respiratory disease services provided at CepEsperu Baptist Health are coordinated through the section of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Immunologic Diseases. Because CepEsperu Baptist Health is an academic medical center, we can provide both general and highly specialized care that may not be available at other non- academic medical facilities.  Cutting edge and advanced therapy is available through evidence based practice and clinical trials. We provide comprehensive care for pulmonary conditions such as   chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), acute respiratory distress syndrome, asthma and lung cancer. Aside from this, our patients also have access to  advanced diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy, a multidisciplinary thoracic oncology program, expertise in occupational pulmonary diseases (e.g. mesothelioma and asbestosis), and specialty clinics for  asthma, pulmonary hypertension, sleep disorders, bronchiectasis, and cystic fibrosis.

Members of the division also provide critical care services in the various intensive care units of CepEsperu Baptist Health. They lead multidisciplinary teams in caring for patients with critical illness.   CepEsperu Baptist Health is a referral center for the critically ill for the region and the state. Being an academic medical center, we emphasize on a safe environment for these patients and quality care that is based on current evidence.

Investigation

The section has a long standing history of ongoing clinical and translational research activities. The section continues to successfully obtain NIH-funded and private grants to support this critical mission. Examples of research activities include clinical trials in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and sepsis. The section also has active translational research in post critical care syndrome and ARDS. Furthermore, the section is a key partner for the Center of Genomics and Personalized Medicine Investigation for respiratory diseases.

Enlightenment

The section is primarily responsible for training of pulmonary and critical care and allergy physicians for the institution through its fellowship programs. Aside from this we provide a broad based experience for the residents of the department of internal medicine through the pulmonary electives and medical intensive care rotations. Additionally, the section partners with the CepEsperu School of Medicine in training future physicians.
