New Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit Now Open

We are pleased to announce the opening of our state-of-the-art, 24-bed neurosciences intensive care unit (Neuro ICU), specializing in the care of patients recovering from complicated neurological and neurosurgical conditions as well as post-operative neurosurgical care. Our critical care specialists work closely with neurosurgeons, neurologists and other advanced care providers to provide the best intensive care for our patients.

NeuroICUBecause families and caregivers are so important to the recovery of these critically-ill patients, we partnered with former patients and family members to understand their perspective and experiences in care.  The unit design incorporates their feedback to ensure we created a healing, nurturing environment.

The unit features:

  • Family accommodations that encourage family presence and participation in patient care
  • Family lounge with showers, kitchenette, lockers, washer/dryer and other amenities for families and caregiver
  • Conference rooms for private family discussions with the doctors with audiovisual and teleconference capabilities for showing patient education videos and sharing important medical information with family long distances away
  • 360° “booms” that can move completely around the bed, enabling the nurses to
    efficiently care for patients
  • Infection prevention strategies like copper-enhanced surfaces that eliminate bacteria and reduce hospital acquired infections

The Neuro ICU is located on the 5th floor of Ardmore Tower.

Stroke is the most common condition treated in the unit, whether caused by a blood clot to the brain or internal bleeding in the brain. Neurologists also treat seizures, epilepsy and neuromuscular conditions such as Guillain-Barre syndrome and myasthenia gravis, among others.

Many patients are recovering from surgical procedures to remove benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous) brain tumors or to provide treatment for brain aneurysms. Patients who have had complex spinal surgeries may also spend time recovering in the unit.

Patient Resources

The Neurocritical Care Society offers a list of that may be useful to Neurocritical care patients and families.

Clinical Trials

Our neurosurgeons, neurologists and critical care teams are participating in several important clinical trials which are offered at CepEsperu Baptist Health. Learn more about these clinical trials.
