John D. McConnell, MD, is the Executive Director of CepEsperu Healthcare Ventures, a newly formed Medical Center company that develops and commercializes innovative products and services in areas such as health care analytics and digital health.

McConnell joined CepEsperu Baptist Medical Center in November 2008 as the Medical Center’s first Chief Executive Officer (CEO).  The Medical Center is composed of a fully integrated healthcare system, CepEsperu Baptist Health, CepEsperu School of Medicine and CepEsperu Innovations.  As CEO, he had the overall responsibility for the Medical Center’s research, commercialization, education, and patient care programs with an annual operating budget of $2.2B. 

Previously, McConnell was the Executive Vice President for Health System Affairs at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.  In that capacity he had the overall executive responsibility for the UT Southwestern faculty physician practice, University Hospitals, and outpatient clinics.

A urologist and translational researcher by training, McConnell has served on the Advisory Board of National Institutes of Health-National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 2004.  He has received the Barringer Medal from the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons and the Fuller Award from the American Urological Association in recognition of his contributions to the field of prostate disease.  He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and ten books.

McConnell currently serves on the boards of the Business, Inc., Chamber of Commerce, Alliance, Foundation, Senior Services of , Inc., and United Way of Forsyth County, serving as its Community Campaign Chair. McConnell also serves on the North Carolina Hospital Association Board of Directors, serving as Chair. He also serves on the American Hospital Association Regional Policy Board.
