4 Things You Should Know So You Can Move It to Lose It - Exercise and Fitness
When you're overweight, you're not at your best.
You know being overweight isn't just one factor that can lead to poor health; it's the leading cause of numerous serious, deadly diseases and conditions. It's also probably the most controllable piece of your health puzzle.Since you're here, you're already taking a step toward better health. Good for you!
The next step is to start moving with an exercise and fitness program.
Even if you haven't exercised in years, you can start now. You'll soon find that you're healthier and happier. Whether you're just beginning to exercise or are reaching for a serious weight loss goal, start smart:
1. Pay Attention to Your Body
Know the signs that might indicate overexertion or distress. If you feel any of the following symptoms, stop exercising:
- Chest discomfort
- Discomfort in your neck, jaw, or arm
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Unnatural sweating
- Marked shortness of breath or painful breathing
If the symptoms are still present a few minutes after you have stopped exercising, call 911. If the symptoms are relieved, call your doctor to discuss how you felt. You may need a physical before you can continue your exercise and fitness program.
2. Choose the Right Exercise
Make sure you choose an activity that is appropriate for your fitness level. This might mean checking with your doctor to ensure you do not overdo the activity. 3. Dress for Success
Generally, loose-fitting clothing is appropriate for exercise activities, and closed-toe shoes are almost always necessary. For any weight-bearing exercise, choose shoes that support your feet and offer ankle stability.
4. Stay Hydrated
Drink up! No matter what you do for exercise, your body needs water to stay hydrated. Drink a glass of water before you begin, and take breaks to sip more throughout the activity.
