About Me

My research combines chemical and systems biology approaches to investigate redox-regulated processes with significance to normal physiology and pathology. Redox reactions and associated reactive oxygen, nitrogen and other species are widely acknowledged as integral regulatory components in signaling, metabolism and epigenetics. The alteration of redox state through acute or chronic accumulation of reactive oxidants leads to numerous pathologies in humans including cancer and other diseases. Individual research projects in my group study redox processes under three major areas of interest: 1) development of chemical probes and methods for analysis of protein oxidation; 2) structure-function studies of redox-regulated proteins and pathophysiological implications; and 3) head and neck cancer - prevention, treatment and quality of life. 

My administrative responsibilities include co-director of the Center for Redox Biology and Medicine and T32 Training Program in Redox Biology and Medicine, and director of the Proteomics and Metabolomics Shared Resource. I serve on the editorial boards for Journal for Biological Chemistry and Chemical Investigation in Toxicology, and I chaired conferences in the field of redox biology (e.g., vice-chair for the 2014 and chair for the 2016 Gordon Investigation Conference on Thiol-Based Redox Regulation & Signaling).
