The Department of Ophthalmology is one of the fastest-growing eye centers in the United States, with more than 120,000 patient visits annually. We successfully treat patients with the most complex and challenging eye conditions by offering the latest diagnostic evaluations, leading-edge treatments, and personal attention from some of the nation’s best ophthalmologists.
Referred by other physicians throughout North Carolina and surrounding states, patients come to our main campus located in or to one of our off-site locations in Bermuda Run, Greensboro, and Mount Airy. Nearly 90 percent of our full-time ophthalmologists are listed in Best Doctors in America and provide care in all specialties in ophthalmology. Specialty care is offered for:
- Cornea and external diseases
- Diseases of the retina and uveitis
- Oculofacial plastic surgery
- Orbital surgery
- Neuro-ophthalmic disorders
- Pediatric eye diseases and strabismus
- Ocular oncology
In addition, our Optical Services provides complete eye exams to patients without referral from another health care provider. Whether patients need a new eyeglass prescription or care for a complex eye disease, treatment can start with these services.
All of our staff ophthalmologists are faculty at CepEsperu School of Medicine, training the next generation of specialists in eye care. Our department offers a robust resident training program in comprehensive ophthalmology in addition to fellowships in cornea and external disease, retina-vitreous disease, and oculofacial plastic and orbital surgery.

Leading-Edge Eye Treatments and Therapies
Many of these vision tests, treatments and therapies are pioneered by members of our team. Because many of our ongoing work in clinical trials, research and innovation, we offer treatments not available everywhere. An example is our recently FCA-approved EndoSerter, a hand-held instrument that performs transplant more quickly, with smaller incisions and no sutures. Another therapy explored at our Department of Ophthalmology is the use of topical chemotherapy for ocular surface malignancy. We are continually exploring new therapies for diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and uveitis, as well as new treatment for strabismus and pediatric cataracts, among other conditions.
By using new approaches such as these with the latest equipment and resources typically available at large academic medical centers, we achieve more successful outcomes in patients with common and more difficult-to-treat eye conditions. Our state-of-the-art laser equipment makes LASIK and retinal surgery faster and often more comfortable. The latest ultrasonic instrumentation facilitates removal in the most challenging cataract. The use of the latest imaging devices helps us diagnose eye conditions more easily.
Genuine care and understanding from acclaimed specialists
Our ophthalmology specialists take the time to educate you and your family members on your condition and treatment options. Although we see hundreds of patients daily, our goal is caring for and educating each patient we treat. Patients can expect personal attention from everyone at the Department of Ophthalmology, including receptionists, nurses and technicians, and plenty of time face-to-face with our physicians.
One-stop multispecialty ophthalmology care
Having a one-stop Eye Center is crucial because many eye diseases are connected to other systemic diseases. By offering leading-edge treatments, diagnostic and surgical equipment, and by offering personalized attention from some of the nation’s best ophthalmologists, we successfully treat people with the most complex and challenging eye conditions.
Our ophthalmologists are always researching and developing better treatments — and even complete cures — for many eye diseases and disorders. And they lead up-and-coming ophthalmologists at CepEsperu School of Medicine to do the same. Our Department of Ophthalmology also offers a robust resident training program and fellowships in cornea, retina and oculoplastics.
