Cancer Patient Support Program

Recognizing the unique need for a patient and family support program, the Comprehensive Cancer Center provides different programs to enhance the quality of life for patients and family members while they navigate the complexities of cancer diagnosis, treatment and survivorship.

Five staff members and more than 30 volunteers provide comfort, support and hope to cancer patients and family members. In fact, the National Cancer Policy Board cites these programs as a best practices model for Comprehensive Cancer Centers.

Cancer Patient Support Program (CPSP)

This program is staffed by our team members and volunteers.  We help patients navigate the Cancer Center, provide counseling in the hospital and in the outpatient clinic, and manage educational programs and support meetings.  A Resource Center is also available for patients and family members, and volunteers offer appearance consultations and help with hospitality rooms. Learn more about the Cancer Patient Support Program (CPSP).

Psychosocial Oncology Program (POP)

This program provides counseling for patients and family members.  A trained psychologist usually conducts therapy sessions, where patients discuss the anxiety around cancer treatment. Learn more about the psychosocial oncology program.

Individual Counseling

The Psychosocial Oncology and Cancer Patient Support Programs provide individual counseling in inpatient and outpatient settings.  Licensed professionals are available to discuss ways of coping with diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship.  Outpatient appointments are scheduled at the patient's convenience, and in conjunction with medical appointments when possible. Please call (336) 716-7980 to set up an appointment.

CPSP Welcome Hour

A CPSP Welcome Hour is held every Wednesday from 12-1:00pm in the Comprehensive Cancer Center Hospitality Room on the 3d floor.  This time offers patients and caregivers a chance to learn about services the CPSP offers, speak with a member of the CPSP staff about their experience, and to connect with others who are undergoing treatment at the medical center.  Refreshments and snacks will be provided during this time.

Coffee & Conversation for Caregivers

Join us every Thursday from 1:30-3:00pm in the 6th floor Family Serenity Room in the Comprehensive Cancer Center.  This time provides caregivers an opportunity to connect with others who are caring for a loved one with cancer.  Caregivers can share their stories and provide support to one another, as well as gain skills, tools, and knowledge that may help you to take better care of yourself during this difficult time.  Refreshments and snacks will be provided, as well as a weekly drawing for a $25 gas card.

Pathways to Survivorship

This meeting is the first Wednesday of every month from 1:00-2:00pm at the 3rd floor Hospitality Room.  The diagnosis and treatment of cancer can be a shock to patients and caregivers. This class is designed to provide information to help patients navigate through this complex medical system, manage health information, and communicate effectively with staff.  All patients and caregivers will be provided a Free Lunch, as well as a Free Livestrong Guidebook designed to help patients throughout all stages of survivorship. The information provided will help patients and caregivers be active participants in their treatment planning.  Call Aimee Tolbert at (336) 716-1693 for questions/register.  [email protected]

Seasons of Survival – Moving Beyond Treatment

This is scheduled quarterly.  A four-week workshop that helps cancer survivors & family understand and navigate both active treatment and post-treatment life where a “new normal” is often established.  Free Lunch and planning materials provided.  Call Aimee Tolbert at -1693 for questions/register.  [email protected]

CPSP Hospitality Rooms

These areas, staffed by dedicated volunteers, offer a relaxed setting with snacks and drinks for patients and families awaiting treatments.  We have two Hospitality Rooms – one on the 1st floor in the Radiation Oncology department and another one on the 3rd floor in the Hematology and Oncology clinic.  Open weekdays from 8:30am – 4:30pm.

CPSP Resource Center

Located on the 2nd floor of the Outpatient Cancer Center, the Resource Center is full of information and items for patients and their families.  Brochures, books and pamphlets that cover a variety of health and cancer related topics are available.  Computers, that have cancer-related websites booked marked, are also available for internet browsing.  Please see the volunteer on duty or call the CPSP administrative secretary at (336) 716-7980 for help.

Healing Music

Ruth Moskop PhD, a Certified Clinical Musician, and other harpists play in the outpatient clinic on various days of the week.  This service is offered to help patients and family members waiting for appointments.  Therapeutic harp music is also available for individual patients in the hospital oncology units.  Please call (336) 716-7980 to request therapeutic music in a patient’s room.  Please check our monthly calendar for special music and for information about our Healing Drum Circle where folks come in with a frown and go out with a smile.

Volunteer Services

There are CPSP volunteers in the 1st and 3rd floor Hospitality Rooms and in the Resource Center on the 2nd floor.  Many of them are veteran cancer patients, and they specialize in listening carefully and responding thoughtfully.  Our volunteers are here to support you!
