Brain Tumor Surgery

Will I need brain tumor surgery?

Our team of specialists works with you to develop the most effective treatment plan for your brain tumor. Treatment options often depend on the:

  • Size of the tumor
  • Tumor type
  • Location of the tumor
  • Your general state of health overall

Brain Tumor Treatment Option: Neurosurgery

Surgery is a common option for brain tumors, especially those that have not spread to other parts of the body. Your neurosurgeon may be able to surgically remove the entire tumor. Surgery can also reduce the size of tumors that affect other brain tissue, or are too deep to completely remove. This procedure is called “debulking.”

Common surgical options include:

  • Craniotomy – In this procedure, you are under general anesthesia as your neurosurgeon removes part of your skull to gain access to your brain. The procedure aims to remove your tumor completely, or reduce its size as much as possible. Then, your neurosurgeon replaces the removed piece of skull.
  • Awake craniotomy – This procedure allows your surgeon to map out sensitive and affected areas of your brain. You are under local anesthesia and are awake for parts of this surgery.

Often, surgery helps to reduce pressure within the brain and relieve symptoms. Surgery can also be followed by chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. At the Cancer Center, we also offer novel therapeutics as an advanced option for treatment, as well as clinical trials
