Playing Bingo Combines Nutrition and Connection in Davie County

Davie Bingo

Numbers speak loudly.

Sixty to 70 regulars visit Davie County Senior Services for twice-monthly Wednesday morning bingo sessions, competing for a chance at small prizes. Most stay for the free lunch.

Rita Keen began attending programs at Davie County Senior Services a year ago. She quickly earned the nickname, “Energizer bunny,’’ for her lively personality.

“I suffer from depression. Sometimes I get down and just need human contact,” she said. “Even if they didn’t have meals, I would come.” Rita has become a regular.

The healthy meals are important in a county with a growing 60 and older population.

“A lot of the people don’t have families or friends in the area,” said Kelly Sloan, services coordinator for Davie County Senior Services. “If it weren’t for our nutrition programs, they would be alone all the time. This meal assures they’re getting a nice, balanced, warm meal every day, Monday to Friday.”

In 2015-16, Davie County Senior Services provided nearly 46,000 nutritious lunches, including meals delivered to people who are homebound. Another 12,000 units of a nutritional supplement drink were given to people who can’t tolerate solid food.

The importance of nutrition for this age group led Wake Forest Baptist Health Davie Medical Center to provide a grant for the nutrition programs.

Chad Brown, president of Davie Medical Center, said “the nutrition programs help ensure that many older residents have a healthy, well-balanced lunch.

“And they also give people time to socialize—during many unique programs at the Senior Services building or, for the homebound, by being able to chat with the terrific volunteers who deliver meals,” Brown said.

Sloan said the continuing surge in the older population in Davie County demonstrates the importance of the nutrition programs.

“We’re grateful to our many volunteers and organizations such as Davie Medical Center that support our mission,” Sloan said.
