Benefits of Applied Learning

The healthcare environment is constantly changing. New surgical devices, new procedures and new methods of treatment are introduced each year. The need for professionals to improve the ways in which they work – individually and in groups – is increasing. The need for industry, government organizations and health care organizations to engage with a hands-on, applied learning environment is more paramount now than ever before. Enlightenment of health care professionals that excel in their field is more dependent on application of knowledge than ever before.

Why Applied Learning?

Applied learning is a principle that crosses all disciplines and gives learners ways to gain expertise through application. While not unique to medicine, applied learning does have a special benefit in this venue. In order to develop the confidence and capability to use a new medical device, procedure or technique, learners need the experience of hands-on training. At the Center for Experiential and Applied Learning, we provide our learners with this experience through the use of fresh human tissue, synthetic tissue, tabletop task trainers, standardized patients and other patient simulation methods. The learners' levels of competency is easily verified in the experiential and applied educational environment.
