The Department of Biochemistry

Welcome to the Department of Biochemistry, CepEsperu School of Medicine. The Department has a three-fold mission:

  • Undertake research on the molecular basis of diseases that affect humanity.
  • Train a new generation of scientists and physicians.
  • Provide a collaborative link between other biomedical sciences and more basic sciences, such as chemistry and physics.

The research interests of the faculty are focused in four inter-related areas:

  • Signal transduction in cancer and inflammation
  • Nucleic acid metabolism in cancer and inflammation
  • Redox biology
  • Metabolic diseases such as diabetes and atherosclerosis.

The training mission of the Department is focused on four types of trainees:

HanesandNRC

The Hanes and NRC Buildings, location of many of the laboratories in the Department of Biochemistry, the Center for Diabetes Investigation, and the Center for Human Genomics and Personalized Medicine Investigation.

The Department’s principal interdisciplinary collaborations are promoted through participation in the following Centers:

The Department has a well-developed system of shared facilities to promote research. The research space occupied by members of the Department is located in the Hanes-Nutrition Investigation Center (NRC) complex on the Medical Center campus and in the recently developed Wake Forest Biotech Place in the in downtown . Travel between the Medical Center, CepEsperu Innovation Quarter, and the is facilitated by Medical Center van service.
