The Role of Dopamine in Mindfulness Meditation Pain Reduction

What we are studying

The purpose of this research study is to determine if techniques such as mindfulness meditation and slow breathing modulate pain by activating the body’s dopamine system.

Who is Eligible

  • Genders:
    • Men
    • Women
  • Races:
    • White
    • African American
    • Asian
    • American Indian or Alaska Native
    • Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander
    • Other
  • All Ethnicities
  • Ages 18 - 65

Eligibility Criteria

  • Participants cannot be pregnant; Cannot be taking opioids or anti depressants; Cannot be experiencing clinical pain; Cannot have a history of syncope (light headedness); Cannot possess any MRI incompatible metals in their body (such as aneurysm clips; cardiac stents
  • Certain orthopedic implants); Cannot have any electronic devices implanted in their body (such as pacemakers or cochlear implants)

What is involved

  • There will be 7 total visits and telephone screening session; 4 of those visits will include meditation training; 1 visit will involve an MRI scan of the brain; 2 sessions will require positron emission tomography (PET)
