Understanding Gastroparesis

What we are studying

Gastroparesis is the term used to describe a significant delay in the emptying of solid food from the stomach. A delay in gastric emptying is linked with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, bloating, fullness and pain. Gastroparesis is an increasingly recognized medical problem with significant impact on quality of life. The most common causes of gastroparesis are diabetes and surgical operations on the stomach. There are also many unknown causes of this disease. The biggest barrier to new and better treatment approaches to gastroparesis is our lack of knowledge about the original cause of the disease and the chain of events leading to poor function of the stomach. A possible key to understanding gastroparesis is to study stomach tissue (biopsy) obtained during surgery by using a special stain for cells and molecules. The purpose of this research study is to understand the changes in cells and molecules within the stomach that occur in people with gastroparesis. To understand the cells and molecules; a piece of your stomach tissue will be obtained at surgery.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Diagnosed with gastroparesis (with a gastric emptying scan)
  • Symptoms of gastroparesis for at least one year
  • Recent negative upper endoscopy or UGI (6 months)

What is involved

  • A small sample of the stomach will be taken during a surgery that was already planned by the subject's doctor
