Anesthesia Services for Digestive Health

The Department of Anesthesiology and the Department of Gastroenterology (GI) work together to provide a safe, comfortable experience during all of the procedures in the Digestive Health Center and at our Shepherd Street clinic, as well as at our Lexington and Davie medical centers.  

Your anesthesia services will be provided by an anesthesia care team which includes anesthesiologists, certified registered nurse anesthetists, and resident physicians.  

What type of anesthesia will you have?
For most procedures, you will be given sedation, also known as monitored anesthesia care (MAC). In most cases, a medication called propofol will be given through your IV. This medicine will cause you to be very relaxed and unaware of the procedure. If there is a reason that this medicine cannot be used the day of your procedure, the anesthesia team will discuss this with you. General anesthesia is needed for some procedures. This will be discussed with you on the day of the procedure.  

Before your procedure:Patients with complicated medical problems will be scheduled for an appointment at the Preoperative Assessment Clinic (PAC)  (usually a few days prior to the scheduled procedure) to meet with members of the anesthesia team to discuss their medical history and possibly have further testing before the procedure. This is done so that your anesthesia team can make sure you are in the best health possible before we perform the anesthesia needed for your procedure. During your PAC visit you will also receive detailed information about what medicines to take before your procedure.  

In the days before your scheduled procedure in the Digestive Health Center, you will receive information in the mail with instructions about when to stop eating and how to prepare for your study. Below are the directions for eating and drinking prior to your procedure:

  • if your procedure is a morning appointment (between 6 AM - 11 AM), please have nothing by mouth after midnight the night before the procedure
  • if your procedure is scheduled in the afternoon (between 11:30 - 3 PM), you may have a clear liquid diet until 8 AM the morning of your appointment.

Your Clear LIquid Diet May Consist of:

  • Beverages: DO NOT consume anything colored Red or Purple!
    • Soft Drinks – orange, ginger ale, cola, Sprite, 7-Up, Gatorade, Kool-Aid
    • Strained fruit juices – apple, white grape, lemonade
    • Water, tea, coffee (no milk or non-dairy creamer)
  • Soups:
    • Chicken or beef bouillon/broth
  • Desserts: DO NOT consume anything Red or Purple!
    • Hard candies, Jell-O, Popsicles (no sherbet) 

On the Day of Surgery/Procedure:

  • Wear comfortable clothing.
  • Bring an adult friend or relative to receive postoperative care instructions, transport you safely home, and stay with you for a bit. You will not be allowed to have your procedure performed if you do not bring a driver.
  • Arrive 1 hour prior to the scheduled start time of your procedure. You will meet with a Digestive Health nurse who will ask a few health-related questions and start an IV.
  • Prior to the procedure, you will speak with both the physician performing the procedure and a member of the anesthesia team to discuss any concerns and answer any questions you have regarding the procedure and to finalize your anesthetic plan.
  • In the procedure room you will be monitored at all times by a board certified anesthesiologist and/or a CRNA.  

After the Procedure:

  • You will continued to be monitored by a nurse while you recover
  • The doctor who performed the procedure will talk to you.
  • You will be given postoperative instructions and contact information
  • You can be driven home by your driver.
  • For the rest of the day, please do not:
    • Drive a motor vehicle
    • Use machinery that requires judgment or skill
    • Consume alcohol
    • Take any sedative medication
    • Sign any legal documents
    • Make major financial decisions
    • Be the only person in charge of children or other dependent individuals  

Please call -8204, if you have any questions or concerns following your procedure. If after 4:30 pm please call . Please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room for an urgent need.
