Curriculum and Evaluation

Theory

The 24-month program consists of academic and clinical coursework which is divided into four semesters and two summers of course work. Formal classes begin in August of each year. 

With the aid of faculty instruction, academic knowledge is correlated with applied practice experiences which exceed the minimal requirement of the Council on Accreditation. Clinical training includes approximately cases with over 1 hours of clinical practicum experience. These anesthesia cases include pediatrics, obstetrics, geriatrics, open heart, neurological, plastic, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, urology, orthopedics, radiological and transplant procedures. Both elective and emergency anesthetics are given.

Students obtain clinical experiences at a variety of affiliated clinical sites which provide a broad exposure to anesthetic practice. Students provide their own transportation to and from all sites, which are all within commuting distance from . It is advisable for students to reside in  so as to be central to our clinical sites.  Clinical education is enhanced by our Center for Applied Learning, which leads students on a progressive increase in realism of training experiences, prior to actual patient contact. Applied Learning components include an anesthesia skills lab, fresh cadaver lab, two human patient simulation labs, a standard patient assessment lab, and the opportunity to participate in state-of-the-art multi-disciplinary anesthesia crisis resource management training.

Student Evaluation

Grading is on a 4.0 scale and the student must obtain an overall 3.0 grade point average to be eligible for graduation. Other graduation criteria include satisfactory completion of all clinical rotations in the program, payment of all fees and satisfactory completion of a comprehensive examination in the final semester of the program. Criteria for progression include:

  • maintaining a “B” average overall. 
  • achieving no more than 6 credit hours of grades below B or a grade below B in  any clinical courses.
  • adequate clinical performance, which is evaluated on a daily basis throughout the 24 month program.
